    • Abstract:
This article deals with tire and rubber production in Poland in 1918-1939--specifically, the author focuses upon the development and the expansion of the Polish domestic rubber industry, which was tied closely to Polish defense policy. Noted are the political and financial measures the Polish government undertook to improve the quality and quantity of Polish rubber production in the period (e.g. 1932 legislation that afforded it better terms for loans and special assistance in building new production centers and factories within the Central Industrial Zone (Centralny Okręg Przemysłowy). The author argues that such activity was a prime example of Polish statism/state intervention in the interwar period; however, he finds that the state's endeavors yielded mixed results because of the state's changing/contradictory policies vis-à-vis Poland's automotive industry.
