      The article discusses research on microbes living in and around human bodies, or the microbiome. It comments on the impact of the microbiome on the digestive and immune systems and reflects on the impact of microbes on conditions such as obesity, allergies, diabetes, and development of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in babies. The author comments on the public reception of the idea of the microbiome, skeptics of microbial research, and the impact of antibiotics and antibacterial soaps and lotions on the microbiome.
