The article presents a profile of genomics researcher Elaine Mardis, co-director of the Genome Institute at Washington University (WU) School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, focusing on her work using DNA sequencing in the study of the cancer genome. Her education and research into bacterial DNA sequencing at the University of Oklahoma (OU) is described. Other topics include her development of a DNA isolation technique, a genomics project to study mutations related to acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and use of cancer genomics data to develop targeted or personalized chemotherapies.
