- Abstract: An essay is presented on the rise of conservative evangelical Christians in the U.S., noting that many evolved from the liberal hippie movement of the 1960s. Topics include the Jesus People Christian hippie movement during the 1960s, the influence of pastor Chuck Smith at Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa, California, and the role of antiabortion activism in the political transformations of many evangelical Christians.
