- Abstract:
The article focuses on the history of South African foreign relations at the beginning of the suppression by the 5th Brigade of Zimbabwean soldiers called the Gukurahundi in Zimbabwe under Prime Minister Robert Mugabe between 1981 and 1983. The author contends that Cold War relations between the United Kingdom and Zimbabwe helped to provide cover for the 5th Brigade's terror campaign, which included atrocities against Zimbabwean civilians. The author asserts that diplomatic history of the Gukurahundi is useful in understanding the tragedy from a Cold War context, and also discusses the role of the Zimbabwe African National Union -- Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) and the Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU) in the situation.
