      This article provides a criticism of films relating to the representation of urban life, industrialization, and the metropolis during the 1920s and 1930s. The author describes the influence of modernization on the depiction of urban life in film during the interwar period. Several films are cited as examples, including Fritz Lang's "Metropolis," Walter Ruttmann's "Berlin: Symphony of a Great City," and Charlie Chaplin's "Modern Times."
