      The article offers the author's insights on the history of California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) which is celebrating its 40th anniversary. The author states that the pioneers of the CCOF enforced an organic certification program to identify organically produced farm products. She says that the agricultural Direct Marketing Act in 1978 allowed farmers to directly sell their produce and authorized Community Supported Agriculture (CSAs) and farm stands as outlets for organic products.
