Camping with Bigfoot: Sasquatch and the Varieties of Middle-Class Resistance to Consumer Culture in Late Twentieth-Century North America.

The article presents an analysis of the use of the legendary character of Bigfoot in U.S. popular culture as a thematic emblem of resistance to middle class consumer culture in the 1970s and 1980s. Several forms of social resistance against the pressure of mass culture consumerism which utilized Bigfoot are described, including its appearance in the camp subculture, the view that Bigfoot was an alternative manifestation of the Green Man and form of environmental escapism, and seeing Bigfoot as a wise external counselor, exhibiting archetypical masculine identity.
