    • Abstract:
The article discusses German general Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck, particularly examining his status as a hero for his actions in German East Africa during World War I. It comments on his attitude and determination and considers other factors that impacted his success, including timing, luck, and the weaknesses of the Allied forces he faced. The author considers von Lettow's earlier military experiences, including his involvement suppressing the Boxer Rebellion in China in 1901 and a rebellion in Germany's South-west Africa colony, or modern-day Namibia. Von Lettow's attitudes toward Nazis are also considered.
