    • Abstract:
The article discusses the attitudes toward censorship, freedom of expression, and clandestine literature and publishing of German Enlightenment writer Christoph Martin Wieland. The authors provide an overview of the censorship regime in 18th-century German-speaking Europe, illustrating this with the examples of censors' reactions to Wieland's books "Die Geschichte des Agathon" and "Der Goldne Spiegel." They then examine elements of self-censorship and subversiveness in Wieland's work as editor of the literary periodical "Teutscher Merkur."
