- Abstract:
The article discusses hypoxic pathophysiology and high-altitude medicine as of December 2012, with a focus on the paracrine-autocrine regulatory mechanisms of the carotid body and their potential functional responses to chronic hypoxemia. Topics include hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Additional information is presented on nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), ventilatory acclimation to hypoxia, and chemosensitive glomus cells.
