      The article aims to indicate the position of the European territorial cooperation within the main objectives of the UE regional policy, which provides the background to identify efficient instruments eliminating socio-economic differences among member states and as a result among regions as well. In 2007-2013 Poland received € 67.3 billion from the European Community budget for activities related to the regional policy - the largest share of all EU member states. This amount has also been allocated for cross-border cooperation programmes, whose main objective is to correct the development disparities in the border areas within the Community.       Głównym celem artykułu jest wskazanie miejsca „Europejskiej współpracy terytorialnej" pośród głównych celów polityki regionalnej Unii Europejskiej, poprzez którą poszukiwane są efektywne instrumenty niwelujące zróżnicowanie społeczno-gospodarcze między krajami członkowskimi, a w konsekwencji także między regionami. W latach 2007-2013 na działania związane z polityką regionalną Polska uzyskała z budżetu Wspólnoty 67,3 mld euro - jest to największy udział spośród wszystkich państw członkowskich EU. Kwota ta przeznaczona została m.in. na programy współpracy transgranicznej, których głównym założeniem jest niwelowanie dysproporcji rozwojowych na obszarach nadgranicznych wewnątrz Wspólnoty.
