- Abstract:
An essay is presented which discusses the history of child welfare programs in Great Britain. Topics include a discussion of famous child abuse cases in Great Britain including the death of Dennis O'Neill in 1945 and Maria Colwell in 1973, why the government is considered more and more responsible for the welfare of children in the 21st century, and how a 1985 ruling against Victoria Gillick, mother of ten children, led to the decline of the rights of parents to "own" their children.
