The article provides information on a September 2012 symposium held at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) which focused on U.S. Supreme Court cases on student speech. It discusses speeches from John and Mary Beth Tinker, who were suspended from the Des Moines, Iowa school in 1965 for wearing armbands protesting the Vietnam War, Robert E. Reynolds, a former Missouri principal who removed stories on teen pregnancy from a school newspaper, and Cathy Kuhlmeier Frey, the student who challenged Reynolds.
