    • Abstract:
The paper reports and analyzes the infant, neonatal and post-neonatal mortality evolution from 2001 to 2005, in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. Information for this descriptive study is based on official databases, the results of which show that the infant mortality rate has decreased. Deaths during the neonatal period represented the highest percentage of infant mortality, and neonatal mortality prevailed. Of concern is that the number of underweight newborn mortalities has increased. This increase may be linked to the high rate of pregnant adolescents in Manaus. A great number of newborn deaths could be avoided by proper prenatal appointments and follow-up during childbirth and postpartum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
