      Este trabajo tiene como propósito principal presentar el estado actual sobre los retos y oportunidades que le imponen, al sector bibliotecario, un entorno tecnológico cambiante. El análisis de la literatura se centra en tres elementos fundamentales para el desarrollo de las bibliotecas en la actualidad: los lectores, razón de ser de la institución, los bibliotecarios, como mediadores y facilitadores del proceso informativo y formativo y las tecnologías que favorecen el desarrollo de nuevos servicios y productos. En el documento se reflexionan sobre estos aspectos, exponiendo la necesidad de que el bibliotecario reconozca el papel a desempeñar en la actualidad para que su labor siga siendo relevante.       This article has as its main purpose to present the current state of the question related with the challenges and opportunities imposed to the library sector by a changing technological environment. The analysis of the literature focuses on three key elements for the development of libraries today: the readers -the reason for the existence of libraries-, librarians -as mediators and facilitators of information and educational processes- and technologies -which foster the development of new services and products.
