The article looks at the philanthropy of Louis Bacon, founder of the hedge fund company Moore Capital Management. It recounts how he purchased land areas around the U.S. over many years and used conservation easements to protect them from development. It looks at his 2007 purchase of the huge Trinchera Blanca ranch in Colorado, focusing on his public campaign to block the building of an energy transmission line by two energy companies, Xcel Energy and Tri-State Generation & Transmission, whose planned route included part of the ranch land. It notes his 2012 donation of a large portion of the ranch to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
