      The paper describes a debate in the English newspaper The Independent. The Portman group financed by the alcoholic beverage industry attempted to buy researchers in order to discredit research results unfavourable to industrial interests. Similar examples are referred. Although commercial funding is necessary and welcome, there are reasons for skepticism. Any links between industry and research must be publicly known, and it is important that alternative and preferably public sources be available.
