      The article examines the history of 20th-century Brazilian racial ideologies, or political views regarding race relations. Particular focus is given to the opinions of black Brazilian intellectuals on the topics of race and national identities as well as concepts including citizenship, racial inclusiveness, and political participation. Other topics include racial democracy, the history of democratization in Brazil, and Brazilian political discourse. Additionally, racial discrimination against blacks in Brazil and the impact of slavery on Brazilian political and social conditions are discussed.
