    • Abstract:
scientific and local community perception studies on landscape of scenic beauty were carried out at Pantai Penarak, Langkawi. Horizontal view mapping technique was applied to scientifically map the visual landscape from selected viewpoints. The study categorised two main landscape types namely natural and man made. The natural landscape observed is shaped by three rock diversities, namely limestone, clastic sedimentary and igneous. The man made or built landscape consisted of business premises, fishing jetty, and fishing community settlement. Limestone karstic landscape was identified as the dominant natural landscape in this area. Survey results show that most local communities shared similar views on its aesthetic beauty. About 88% of the respondents agreed that the scenic beauty of Pantai Penarak was due to natural landscape while 13% agreed that it was contributed by both man made and natural landscapes. The study shows that most of the local communities have basic understanding of geology and are able to relate the sketched geological landscape to the observed landscape. It is important to note that most of them strongly viewed that any future development in this area should take necessary considerations to preserve the natural landscape. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
