- Abstract:
The article features Richard Wagner, noted German composer, and author Thomas Mann, noted German novelist and 1929 Nobel Prize laureate. The author notes the incomparable importance of the music dramas of Wagner and the literary fiction of Mann, as well as their engagement in a controversial encounter with Germany and the German national character, with Wagner asking the question, "What Is German?" as the title of an essay in 1865, and Mann delivering a lecture, "Germany and the Germans" in 1945.
