The author discusses the role parents play in fostering scientific literacy in their children and argues that parents should engage their children in a STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics or medicine) subject. Topics include the results of the "Longitudinal Study of American Youth," which found a strong correlation between parental encouragement in science and math and college majors; and how parents can support community programs which introduce people to science and math. A chart is also presented which depicts the interaction between students' home and school environments.
