Ethnohistorical records concerning the Guaymí of the Republic of Panama are reviewed to enlighten aspects of continuity and change in Guaymí society. The Guaymí who live in mountainous regions have been least affected by European contact. Language, economy, settlement pattern, marriage customs, post-marital residence patterns and political organization are considered in terms of relative stability or change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
