TRANSLATION AND APPROPRIATION IN THE INVENTION OF A CULTURE: ELIZABETH PEABODY, MARGARET FULLER AND THE TRANSCENDANTALIST MOVEMENT IN THE UNITED STATES. (English)

The American Transcendantalists of the 19th Century, notably Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry Thoreau, whose part in the "invention" of modern American culture is unanimously recognized, devoted much time and attention to the study and translation of the European, especially French and German, authors. Two women, Elizabeth Palmer Peabody and Margaret Fuller, conquered their own access to this group of intellectuals - most of them pastors and ex-pastors trained in Harvard - thanks to the quality of their work as translators. Translating authors whom they cherished particularly allowed them to develop innovative positions within the group. However, the difficulties encountered in the publication of these translations, and the necessity to earn a living, forced these two women to search new ways of putting these authors at the disposal of the American public, thus opening new possibilities of professionalization for women and men alike. Les Transcendantalistes américains du 19e siècle, notamment Ralph Waldo Emerson et Henry Thoreau, dont le rôle dans l'invention de la culture américaine moderne est unanimement reconnu, ont lu et traduit intensivement les auteurs européens, notamment français et allemands. Deux femmes, Elizabeth Palmer Peabody et Margaret Fuller, ont par la qualité de leur travail de traductrices conquis leur droit d'entrée dans ce groupe d'intellectuels composé surtout de pasteurs ou d'ex-pasteurs formés à Harvard. La lecture et la traduction d'auteurs qui leur tenaient cceur a été pour elles un des moyens de développer au sein du groupe des positions originales. Toutefois, les difficultés rencontrées dans la publication de ces traductions et l'obligation où elles se trouvaient de gagner leur vie, les ont contraintes à trouver d'autres moyens de mettre ces auteurs à la disposition du public américain, ouvrant ainsi de nouvelles voies de professionnalisation pour les femmes comme pour les hommes.
