    • Abstract:
An article on Tuesday about genetic illnesses that affect children conceived with donated sperm erroneously included fragile X syndrome among those illnesses. (Although a sperm donor who is a carrier of the fragile X permutation may pass it along to his daughters, the disease, which affects twice as many boys as girls, is almost always inherited from the mother.) The article also misidentified a consequence of a heart defect known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or HCM. Among young athletes, the defect is a leading cause of sudden cardiac death -- not myocardial infarction, or heart attack. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
