    • Abstract:
An essay is presented which explores how Charles Darwin uses examples from the fiction "The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals" to support his argument that human and animals share the same physiological behaviours that signal similar states of consciousness. The author examines Darwin's strategies of presentation on the origin of the pleasure human feels from literary description of pain. The author argues that Darwin's use of fictional example is drawn from his own experience.
