The article discusses the U.S. Navy as of 2012 and compares and contrasts its mission with other eras of U.S. naval history, including naval aviation, since 1901. It draws upon an article entitled "Sea Change," written by George Washington University historian Ronald Spector, in the Winter 2012 edition of the scholarly periodical "The Quarterly Journal of Military History."
