    • Abstract:
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Tradition seemed lost, a new and less-esteemed identity was forming and, yet, Tom Crean said when he became Indiana's coach in 2008, he expected to win national championships. The Hoosiers had been sullied by a poor Academic Progress Rate score of 811, for which they could have faced N.C.A.A. punishment if they did not show immediate improvement, and by recruiting violations committed by the former coach Kelvin Sampson, which led to his resignation and the departure of his staff.
