- Abstract:
The article discusses the role of radio in the conceptualization of William Shakespeare's play "Hamlet" as a site of infinite adaptation in the years during and immediately after World War II in Great Britain. It is argued that radio is one of the most adaptive mediums wherein the listener subjectively creates the play that he or she hears. The "Hamlet"-focused culture of adaptation that was most visible in the work produced by the British Broadcasting Co.'s (BBC) "Third Programme" is described. The body of work derived from the play and produced as radio features is said to have reflected the Programme's institutional, artistic, and intellectual development.
