    • Abstract:
The article presents a study on the regional convergence in low-wage work and earnings in the U.S. from 1970 to 2000. The economic restructuring of the labor markets in the Southern States in the 1970s is outlined. The impact of industrial and occupational differences on the growth of the service industry is highlighted. According to the study, unionization and part-time jobs are essential in understanding the regional low-wage earnings convergence. The authors conclude that the interaction between the regional structure of job opportunities and the racial and gender makeup of workers is important in generating low-wage earnings growth.
