    • Abstract:
The article examines historical documents related to escribanías, or clerks' offices, established by the Council of Castile for the purposes of control and censorship of printed material within eighteenth century Castile, Spain. In 1712, two such offices were implemented in place of a more generalized system that was more dependent on other branches of government. The article describes the processes used by the council to prevent fraudulent publications, as well as restrict the flow of unwelcome information and ideas from reaching the public.
