      In this article the authors offer observations on work they have done to help develop a framework that could support designers working in empathetic design. Particular focus is given to how social theory can be used as a thinking tool for designers. The authors suggest that human activity is fundamentally social, although, most design is geared towards the individual. Several frameworks are explored which focus upon the human social experience and its relationship to new product development (NPD) practices.
