- Abstract:
The vanguards constituted a general phenomenon in Western and Eastern Europe, as well as the United States and Latin America. They emerged as a logic response to Modernist and Symbolist exhaustion, introducing themselves as an anti-rhetoric, prosaic, humorous and nationalist renewal. Like the rest of Latin America, Brazil joined the tendency and by the beginnings of the Twentieth Century traditional productions started to be discredited, as new irreverent works were created from the concept of "the Brazillan". All these factors gathered in an artistic event called "The Week of Modern Art", which took place from February 13 to February 17 1922. Oswald de Andrade participated in the event, thus becoming the main Modernist author with the publication of t h e manifests Pau-Brasil and Anthropophagous. In his 1934 inventionnovel Serafim Ponte Grande,"Oswald de Andrade applied all the theoretic postulates: he innovated the syntax of narrative, the general architecture of the text and its macrostructure. He composed the book with fragments of other books, recurring to different types of discourse. Las vanguardlas constituyeron un fenorneno gencralizado tanto en Europa occidental y oriental como en Estados Unidos y Latinoamerica. Surgieron como respuesta l6gica al agotamiento del Modcrnismo y a] desgaste del Simbolismo, presentandosc como una renovaci6n dcsrctorizantc, prosaica, humorfstica, nacionalista, sencillista, etc. Del mismo modo que el resto de Arn(•rica Latina, Brasil acompafi6 los cambios y comenz6 -alrcdedor de las dos primeras d6cadas de•[ siglo XXa combatir las produccioncs rigidas tradicionales, a disfrutar con la novedad irrevcrunte y a crcar a partir de la "brasilidad".
