The article discusses Protestant immigrants from Prussia, such as public and military officers and college professors, who relocated to the Alsace region (France) during its annexation to Germany from 1896 to 1914. The author looks at the social, religious, cultural, and political tensions and conflicts concerning the immigrants' involvement with sport institutions, particularly ski clubs, and the Alsatians, who were predominantly Catholic and rejected the process of Germanization. Topics include the Protestant immigrants' establishment and control of ski clubs during the 1890s, ski clubs such as the Ski-Club Vogesen Straßburg, and how the Alsatian Catholic community promoted gymnastics as a youth integration and political tool.
