    • Abstract:
The article presents a review of the book 'The Savage Wars of Peace: Small Wars and the Rise of American Power,' by Max Boot. Contributing to America's understanding of itself as an expansive power, Boot describes links in strategy and small-war-making across what he describes as the three periods of U.S. history: from the late 1700s to the 1890s, from 1898 until 1941, and the U.S. entrance into World War II. Overall, Boot offers a useful collection of case studies chronicling the expansion of American power and the 'empire of liberty' across the globe. The reviewer alleges that Boot makes an important and timely contribution to American strategic self-awareness. By revisiting the nation's past, he shows its future.
