The article reports on a survey of practicing Canadian General Internists which was conducted to determine specific competencies for General Internal Medicine (GIM) residents in their 4th and 5th year of internal medicine training. GIM has recently been approved as a subspecialty by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. This is the first study which has attempted to isolate the opinions of practicing Canadian General Internists as to the major competencies that have to be mastered by them as a General Internist. It is suggested by the study that defined objectives for training in this 'newest' of Royal College subspecialties can be identified.
