    • Abstract:
Taking the University as a privileged space for the citizenship formation, this study analyzed the identities construction of Biology students in the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro as they participate in a non formal environmental education project created by their own initiative. Theoretically it was supported by the cultural studies establishing relations with some notions advanced by critical education theoreticians and by studious of contemporary changes in the social relations. The empirical material was obtained through interviews conducted among undergraduate Biology students and former students. The results indicate that the project is seen as an instance where the students acquire experiences perceived as important for their future professional exercise, whose absence they identify in the formal curriculum. The project has also important symbolic and pragmatic meanings for the students and it allows that they construct themselves as active and critical citizens, capable to put forward, to negotiate and to plan educative proposals in an institutional context.
