- Abstract: The writter Jānis Poruks (1871-1911) spent his childhood in loneliness and was raised in a very religious manner. He grew in the environment where dominated the ideas of hernhutism, focusing on spiritual values and on tolerance in social life. Jānis Poruks as a child had to get acquainted with both - Luther's teachings and dogmas of so called "brother's perishes". Impressions from his childhood Jānis Poruks described in his play "Hernhūtieši". Jānis Poruks studied at Riga Polytechnic Institute Preparatory School from 1889 till 1892 and thereafter at Riga Polytechnic Institute from 1897 till 1899 and from 1901 till 1906. The fields he studied were Chemistry (1897-1899) and Commerce (1901-1906). Jānis Poruks was a member in the fraternity "Selonija" and as its Philistine he has written many official greetings in different festivities both for Riga Polytechnic Institute and his fraternity. Unfortunately, Jānis Poruks did not graduate from Riga Polytechnic Institute with any diploma - he was expelled several times for non-payment of tuition fee. When he was last time expelled from Riga Polytechnic Institute in 1906, he already suffered from a mental illness. There is certain view established in the history of Latvian literature, criticism and in whole society -that Jānis Poruks was poet of pain and sorrow. Indeed, all the love and pain, all the hopes and frustrations which he faced in his life he expressed in his poetry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
