    • Abstract:
The article discusses the U.S. military's need to upgrade its existing aircraft and the challenges involved in doing so as of September 2011. It reports that its fleet of F-16s have been in use since the 1980s, and there is a need to replace them with the newer F-35 Lightning II. It states, however, that proposed cuts in spending by the government could delay the purchase of the Lightning II, forcing the military to use the F-16s longer, making them dangerous for pilots.
