    • Abstract:
The godly Protestant writer Abraham Fleming indexed 11 substantial English books between 1576 and 1587, as well as producing a number of ground-breaking original works and innovative translations of Latin classics. His indexes, which included instructions on how to use them, enabled English people to access large and complex books without the need of a cleric or scholar to help them. Fleming's indexes represent some of the earliest English indexes, and were aimed at making hitherto scholarly or religious books accessible to an increasingly independent public sphere.
