- Abstract:
The article presents a study of two varieties of the South African language of Zulu, "isiHlonipho", a formal and polite form of language spoken in rural districts, and "isiTsotsi," a hybrid variety spoken mostly in the townships. The cultural requirements and gender relations of the speakers of these two varieties are discussed, with the gender aspects being studied not only from a sociolinguistic perspective but also from the biological perspective of both men and women. The question of the connection between the two varieties of language and Zulu ethnicity is also explored.
