The author argues that U.S. conservatives, particularly 2012 presidential candidate Michele Bachmann, a U.S. representative from Minnesota, are ignorant about African American family life. The author points to Bachmann's signed pledge regarding marriage vows sponsored by the conservative group Family Leader, the preamble of which suggested that African American children were more likely to be raised in two-parent households during slavery than were African American children after 2008.
