- Abstract:
The article reports on a study in which Derk Joester, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and his team have found the common freshwater green algae sequester strontium into insoluble crystals and this is likely to lead to a way to separate strontium-90 from less hazardous components of nuclear waste. According to first author Minna Krejci, the crystals would be harvested, then incinerated to remove organic matter.
