    • Abstract:
The article focuses on the decision of carmaker Ford Motor Co. to import a handful of the diesel Focuses it offers in Europe, as an answer to the fuel economy standards of the government in the U.S. Ford just wants to show skeptical drivers and policymakers that diesel engines are no longer the smelly, cloud-belching, clanking contraptions that people remember. They have indeed made big improvements. Getting 50 miles per gallon, diesels account for 36% of the western European car market. Though diesels produce 35% less greenhouse gas, they spew carcinogenic soot that gas engines don't and eight times as much smog-causing nitrogen oxides.
