      The article describes the health care among the 5.5 millions of German emigrants who left their homeland to come to the United States for various reasons from 1816 to 1914. It draws information from letters of immigrants including women, soldiers, and craftsman as they sought support for their health care in their families of origin, but also from social networks or communities to which they were connected. It notes gender specific differences, and which treatment options were available. The article also notes that most German emigrants labored on farms or in trades, so they suffered financial loss if they became sick and couldn't work.
