      The article discusses the bacterium E. coli, and in particular the O104:H4 strain implicated in an outbreak in Europe that has been traced to contaminated vegetables. The O104:H4 strain includes portions of DNA that do not exist in other strains, and has shown itself resistant to antibiotics. Microbiologist Philip Tarr says the U.S. is going to have to place a grater emphasis on food safety.
