In this article the authors discuss various rapid metabolic phenotyping techniques for monitoring surgical patients. It states that the metabolic phenotyping approaches, which use nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry of tissue biopsy or biofluid samples, have proven useful for producing diagnostic biomarker information about many diseases. It comments that the diagnostic information can be increased by focusing on several metabolic measurements on the patient during surgery.
