      Abstract: Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze the diagnostic options currently available for evaluating the anatomical relation between the inferior alveolar nerve and apical roots and/or roots of the inferior third molars. Materials and methods: We applied this diagnostic criterion to two clinical cases with the aid of a stereolitografic prototype. Results and conclusions: Our experience confirms the data found in the literature, which show that a thorough first-level radiological examination, such as OPT, can often eliminate the need for more invasive second-level studies.       Riassunto: Obiettivi: Lo scopo di questo studio è di analizzare le diverse opzioni diagnostiche a oggi in uso per la valutazione degli eventuali rapporti anatomici tra il nervo alveolare inferiore (NAI) e gli apici e/o le radici dei terzi molari inferiori. Materiali e metodi: Abbiamo applicato tale criterio diagnostico a due casi clinici con l’ausilio di prototipi stereolitografici. Risultati e conclusioni: Confermando ciò che abbiamo riscontrato in bibliografia, possiamo concludere che un’attenta valutazione degli esami radiologici di primo livello come l’OPT può portare in molti casi a evitare un’indagine di secondo livello più invasiva per il paziente.
