- Abstract:
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Ivan Nova had no time to react when Torii Hunter ripped a line drive directly at his head. So he threw up his glove for protection, the ball striking the heel, then his left hand, before rolling away. That play, which occurred in the fifth inning of the Yankees' 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Friday, was a microcosm of Nova's night. He was adept at avoiding precarious situations, but unable to dodge them all. The Yankees' four-game winning streak ended at Angel Stadium despite an encouraging performance by Nova, who overcame a few shaky innings to work into the seventh, allowing three runs -- two earned -- eight hits and two walks. He gave up what proved the winning run in the fourth, on a bases-loaded single by Peter Bourjos, but rebounded to retire eight of his final 10 hitters. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
