    • Abstract:
HOHHOT, Inner Mongolia -- Chinese authorities publicly acknowledged for the first time on Sunday the depth of anger among ethnic Mongolians over the hit-and-run killing of a herder by a Han Chinese truck driver nearly three weeks ago, which became a catalyst for days of street protests and led to fears among officials here of an outbreak in anti-Han violence. Accounts in the state-run news media said the Communist Party secretary of Inner Mongolia, Hu Chunhua, met with students and teachers on Friday and promised that justice would be done in the May 10 killing of the herder, named Mergen. Two Han Chinese have been arrested in connection with the death. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
